MOL Troubleshooting
Frequent MOL Opening Issues
Avogadro Disappeared
You attempt to load your MOL file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The MOL File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Avogadro isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your MOL with Avogadro, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another MOL application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Avogadro is Out-of-Date
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Avogadro installed that's incompatible with your MDL Molfile type. Visit the Open Source website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Avogadro. Your MDL Molfile file was probably created by a newer release of Avogadro than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your MOL file and clicking "Properties".
Regardless, most of the MOL file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Avogadro installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading MOL Files
Even with the correct version of Avogadro installed, you can still experience difficulties opening MOLs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening MOLs. These issues include:
- MOL file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry MOL description
- Corrupt install of Avogadro or other MOL-related program
- Your MOL file is corrupted (issues with your MDL Molfile file itself)
- Your MOL has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware associated with MOL has outdated drivers
- Windows cannot load your MDL Molfile file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
