Troubleshooting Problems Opening CGB Files
Common CGB Opening Problems
Unknown Software Not Present
Double-clicking your CGB file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open CGB File". If so, it typically means that you don't have Unknown Software installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the CGB file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your CGB, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Obsolete Version of Unknown Software
Your Gameboy Color Data file is incompatible with Unknown Software because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest Unknown Software version from the Unknown Developer website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: If you right-click on your CGB file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening CGB files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional CGB Opening Issues
Even with the correct version of Unknown Software installed, you can still experience difficulties opening CGBs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading CGB files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for CGB
- Unintentional removal of the description of the CGB file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the CGB format
- Your CGB can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- The CGB is infected with a virus
- Drivers associated with CGB software need to be updated
- Windows cannot load your Gameboy Color Data file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
