Sources of SFC Problems
Issues Opening SFC Files
Missing Snes9x
When you double-click your SFC file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Snes9x isn't installed on your PC. You won't be able to double-click to open your SFC because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your SFC file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Outdated Snes9x
Your Super Nintendo ROM file is incompatible with Snes9x because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of Snes9x installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Super Nintendo ROM file was probably created by a newer release of Snes9x than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your SFC file and clicking "Properties".
Regardless, most of the SFC file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Snes9x installed.
Other SFC File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening SFC files even with the latest version of Snes9x installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening SFCs. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for SFC are wrong
- Corruption of the SFC file description inside the Registry
- Partial installation of Snes9x that did not fully complete
- Your SFC file is corrupted (issues with your Super Nintendo ROM file itself)
- Your SFC is infected with malware
- Hardware associated with SFC has outdated drivers
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Super Nintendo ROM format
