Understanding SFV Issues
Frequent SFV Opening Issues
QuickSFV Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open SFV Files" when trying to open your SFV. If so, it typically means that you don't have QuickSFV installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your SFV because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you don't have QuickSFV installed, and you know of another program to open your SFV file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of QuickSFV is Installed
Sometimes your installed version of QuickSFV won't support your Simple File Verification File file. Installing the latest version of QuickSFV from Totally Useful Software Inc is recommended. Most of the time your Simple File Verification File file was created by a newer QuickSFV than what you have installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of SFV file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening SFV files are due to having the wrong version of QuickSFV installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening SFVs
Although you might already have QuickSFV or another SFV-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Simple File Verification File files. If you're still experiencing problems opening SFV files, there could be other computer problems. Additional factors include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for SFV are wrong
- Deletion of the SFV file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a SFV-associated program (eg. QuickSFV)
- Your SFV can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
