Sources of XPE Problems
Frequent XPE Opening Issues
Unknown Software Disappeared
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open XPE Files" when trying to open your XPE. When this happens, it is commonly due to Unknown Software missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your XPE with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens XPE files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Unknown Software Version
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Unknown Software installed that's incompatible with your Uncommon File Extension type. If you do not have the proper version Unknown Software (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Uncommon File Extension file version that was created by a newer version of Unknown Software than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of XPE file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening XPE files are due to having the wrong version of Unknown Software installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading XPE Files
Even with the correct version of Unknown Software installed, you can still experience difficulties opening XPEs. If you are still having problems opening XPE files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for XPE
- The XPE file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a XPE-associated program (eg. Unknown Software)
- Something has caused file corruption of your XPE
- Your XPE has adversely impacted by malware
- XPE-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Uncommon File Extension file
