HRL File Complications
Typical HRL Opening Challenges
Microsoft Notepad Removed
When you double-click your HRL file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Notepad isn't installed on your PC. The typical path of opening your HRL with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your HRL, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Microsoft Notepad Requires Update
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Notepad isn't able to open your Erlang Header File file due to incompatibility. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Notepad installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your Erlang Header File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Notepad than you have on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the HRL file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening HRL files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Notepad installed.
Additional HRL Opening Issues
Errors opening Erlang Header File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Notepad software installed on your computer. Other HRL opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Problems unrelated to software:
- Invalid HRL file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Deletion of the HRL file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a HRL-associated program (eg. Microsoft Notepad)
- File corruption affecting your HRL file
- Your HRL has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your HRL file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Erlang Header File files
