Pubs can open for extra 2 hours on Jubilee weekend

Licensed premises will be able to serve alcohol until 1am, rather than the standard 11pm cut off, on Thursday 2, Friday 3 and Saturday 4 June, announced home office minister Kit Malthouse yesterday (22 March). 

Malthouse confirmed the extended license would not only apply to alcohol sales, but also for the provision of regulated entertainment and the prevision of late-night refreshment, but only where there is also the sale of alcohol for consumption on the premises. 

Time to celebrate

In a written statement to Parliament, he said an impact assessment was being prepared to be published alongside the new licensing order. He also said the extension would let revellers celebrate ‘the longest-reigning monarch in the United Kingdom’. 

Operators are gearing up to the big weekend, with Star Pubs & Bars launching a support package​ for its licensees to help them prepare for the celebrations well ahead of time.  

The kits include Union flag bunting, balloons, posters and outdoor signage, as well as temporary licensing guidance, top picks of British produce and ideas for activities.  

Biggest summer opportunity

Star Pubs & Bars head of digital and retail marketing John O’Connor believed the four-day weekend to be one of the biggest trading opportunities of the summer. 

“With all the restrictions in place over the last two year,” he said, “people want to enjoy activities and entertainment they’ve missed out on.” 

According to a survey by the company, two thirds of people said they were likely to visit a pub during the long weekend, with 94% respondents aware of the celebratory period. 

The order is expected to be laid before Parliament in the next few weeks.
