Trio takes on Shepherd Neame pub​

Three friends have taken on Shepherd Neame pub the Carpenters Arms in the village of Eastling, Kent.

Sarah Neaves and Madeleine Bioletti, who have been best friends for 15 years, teamed up with friend and publican Mark Perkins to reopen the venue.

The trio decided to get behind the bar after the previous licensees left and spent five weeks redecorating and renovating the historic building based on the outskirts of Faversham.

New toilets, complete with beer and key urinals, have been installed, and the large beer garden and barn have also had a thorough makeover, with new tables and chairs installed.

The barn is now home to the Chef’s Table, offering a private dining experience for up to 16 guests.

Some 760 people turned up for the pub’s opening night.

Sarah, 54, a local fruit farmer, said: “The Carpenters Arms is the hub of the village, and it’s one of the prettiest pubs in Kent. I have loved it forever.

“I’ve lived in the village for more than 20 years. So when it became available, I thought, this is it!”

Pub launches fish & shop and ice cream parlour​

The Inn Collection Group has launched a takeaway fish & chip shop and ice cream parlour at the Tynemouth Castle Inn called Oswin’s and Cones.

Staples like cod and haddock, all cooked in either beef dripping or sunflower oil, will be on offer at the pub in Tyne & Wear, as well as battered sausage, haggis, king prawns and squid.

The Ice Cream parlour will serve more than 20 flavours of gelato, and will include dispensers that offer customers the opportunity to add unlimited toppings.

Shepherd Neame expands tenanted estate​

Independent family brewer and pub company Shepheard Neame has expanded its tenanted estate with the acquisition of a historic seafront pub in the South-East.

The Faversham-based firm, which is Britain’s oldest brewery, acquired The Ship Inn in Herne Bay from the Stonegate Group earlier this month.

In addition, the acquisition brought the total number of pubs and hotels in its portfolio to 296 across Kent, London and the South-East.

Licensees Alan and Michele Clarke, who also run Shepherd Neame site the Chesterfield Barn, will remain at the helm of the Ship Inn after taking on the venue in April this year and welcomed the change in ownership.

Famed sandwich maker and publican to open third pub​

Sandwich supremo Max Halley and publican Ethan Davids are opening their third pub together later this month.

Having opened the Five Bells in Salisbury and the Sam Wellers in Bath, the duo’s latest pub is the Wellington Arms, located in the centre of the market town of Marlborough in Wiltshire.

Set to launch on 24 of November, the Grade II-listed building is currently under renovation and will feature an eclectic mix of artwork, traditional pub tables and traditional banquette seating in a mustard yellow when it opens.​

Affectionately known by the duo as The Welly, the pub will have an L-shaped bar and a small fireplace with seating spread across three separate areas.

Eschewing the gastropub model, its food menu will comprise scampi fries, pickled eggs and the “occasional hot sausage”.
