The Cask Project
Theakston and Tiny Rebel collaborate on cask and craft beers
Led by Tiny Rebel’s head brewer Mark Gammons, the team brewed a radical interpretation of the classic, using chocolate malts, 100% pure cocoa, and Fuggles and Progress hops to create Chocolate Old Peculier.
Meanwhile, Theakston’s head brewer Mark Slater and his team took a trip to Newport, south Wales, to create a Yorkshire expression of Tiny Rebel’s Cwtch beer.
Turned to gold
Cwtch is a red beer as a result of the use of rye but the Theakston team turned it gold. The Cwtch Gold version is said to be a blonde, hop-forward beer, made using Munich and other specialist pale malts to impart a different colour and add more malty flavours subtly to the Welsh original.
The two collaboration brews were designed to “highlight the craft, beauty and taste of fresh cask beer and further grow consumer interest in the category”.
Theakston joint managing director Simon Theakston said: “Brewing beer is in our blood and so when given the chance to develop a beer in collaboration with the highly creative and innovative brewing team at Tiny Rebel, one of the most successful brewers of the modern era, it was too good an opportunity for us to miss. We are incredibly excited at the prospect of the tasting the two new beers.”
Enormous pride
Tiny Rebel chief demand officer Mo Syed added: “In the world of cask beer brewing, they don’t come much bigger than Theakston of Masham so to be associated with them in a collaboration is matter of enormous pride to us. We look forward to the outcome of our brewers’ skills and hopefully further brewing collaborations between us in future.”
Chocolate Old Peculier and Golden Cwtch will be featured in a number of special seasonal ale programmes during July and August. And will be available in Tiny Rebel’s bars in Newport and Cardiff, and Theakston’s Black Bull in Paradise in Masham.
