Troubleshoot VBK Files
Common VBK Opening Problems
Veeam Backup & Replication is Not Installed
When you double-click your VBK file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Veeam Backup & Replication for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your VBK because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When another VBK application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Veeam Backup & Replication is Out-of-Date
It is possible that your version of Veeam Backup & Replication isn't able to open your Veeam Backup File file due to incompatibility. Visit the Veeam Software website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Veeam Backup & Replication. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your VBK file and clicking "Properties".
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening VBK files are due to having the wrong version of Veeam Backup & Replication installed.
Other VBK File Issues
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Veeam Backup & Replication will resolve your issue. If you are continuing to have errors with loading VBK files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:
- VBK file type Registry entries are wrong
- Corruption of the VBK file description inside the Registry
- Veeam Backup & Replication or another VBK application experienced a flawed installation
- Your VBK file is corrupted (issues with your Veeam Backup File file itself)
- Your VBK is infected with malware
- Device drivers for VBK-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Veeam Backup File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
