Greene King announces latest limited-edition cask

Launched as part of the Bury St Edmunds based pub operator and brewer’s Fresh Cask Releases 2023 calendar, the 6% ABV golden cask beer will be available direct from Greene King during August and September.

The new serve is a double dry hopped (DDH) IPA, created using British hops, offering fruit aromas and flavours.

Greene King​ head brewer Jack Palmer said: “Mischief Maker is another one of our brand-new launches to the Fresh Cask Releases calendar this year, bringing something exciting and different for customers to try when it comes to cask styles.

British history 

“The story behind this ale adds another unique element, shining a light on a part of British history, and makes for a great conversation over a pint at the pub.”

Mischief Maker’s name takes inspiration from herbalist and astrologer Nicholas Culpeper, who brought medicine to the masses and attempted to make medical treatments more accessible in the 1600s.

One of his well-known quotes, Greene King​ said, mentioned beating roots and herbs to add to ale or beer, and another meaning for the word Culpeper being mischief maker, the brewer added this was the “obvious choice” for the serve’s name.

The hops used in Mischief Maker have all been supplied by Charles Faram, the UK based grower-owned hop merchant, as part of its Hop Development Project, which aims to find agronomically sound and exciting new hop varieties in the UK.

Interesting mix

Comprising of 18 limited-edition cask beers, the Fresh Cask Releases portfolio will be available at specific times throughout the year ahead.

This comes as Greene King’s Abbot Ale was last week awarded silver at the Great British Beer Festival​ for its Champion Beer of Britain accolade.

Palmer added: “With the interesting mix of fruit flavours and experimentation with hops, Mischief Maker is one to have on the bar for the summer months.”
